September 11th Weekly Update

It was a great week last week!  After an unexpected and emotional time off of school, the students came back and never missed a beat.  I'm proud of how well they readjusted back to school, and am looking forward to our first FULL week of school!

This week:

Reading - We will begin laying the foundation for reading comprehension.
Students will learn to visualize what they read as well as stopping
and thinking about what they just read.

Writing-  Students will starting brainstorming ideas for their small moments
                narrative writing.

Spelling - Our first spelling test is THIS Friday.  The words are

family, after, little, cat, glad, wag, scab, jam, fast, slap, fish, chin, kid, zip, swing, pit, twig, stick, king, mist

Science -  We will discuss safety and learn about physical properties

Social Studies- The class will what is a citizen and how to be a good citizen

Math -  We have started the year by reviewing addition and subtraction strategies.  This week will begin with fact families and part / part / whole models.  Our first math test will be NEXT week, but will be mainly word problems.  SO the big focus this week will be UNDERSTANDING word problems.  We will focus not necessarily on the numbers in the problem, but the WHY of solving the problem.
Also, please begin practicing math facts at home.  We will have TIMED fact proficiency tests for a grade starting the 2nd nine weeks.  Students need to know their facts pretty quickly.

September 5th Weekly Update

 Dear Parents,

Welcome "back to school" tomorrow!  I am eager to get back in the classroom and see my sweet students!  Rest assured, we will ease back into the swing of things and make sure we review procedures, etc.   That means there will not be homework or spelling this week.  We are going to pick up right where we left off, and we will not be in "behind mode".

What is going on this week in class:

Reading: We will be learning how to pick just right books, and learning what we do during our workshop time.

Writing:  We will be journaling, and collecting ideas that we might be able to write a story about.

Math: We will be reviewing concepts from first grade, and we will practice working in our stations.

Social Studies: We will create our classroom creed.

Science: We will discuss all the jobs of a Scientist.

Here are a couple of reminders
  • Have your student bring a substantial snack.  We eat late and had some hungry tummies!
  • Doors open at 8:10 and we will meet in the gym
  • We have PE tomorrow
Please let me know if you have any questions!  Also, please be sure to subscribe to my webpage.  I will make updates online frequently.

Have a great evening!
