Weekly Update January 8th - 13th

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday break.  The kids came back ready to go last week.  We used last week as a time to settle back into our routine and get reacquainted with classroom expectations.  This week, we are back to amazing learning opportunities =)
On a quick note, EVERYONE did absolutely extraordinary on our Rise and Shine morning time.  I was so incredibly proud of how well spoken and poised each of the students were.  I might be biased, but I truly think we did the best job so far ;)

Here's a brief overview of our week:

READING:
We will be understanding what the main idea of a story / passage is. As we move forward with main idea, we will apply it across different genres.

WRITING:
Understanding conjunctions

MATH:
We will continue applying our addition and subtraction skills to word problems.  Our focus this test will be on deciding which operation needs to be used to solve the problems.  Often times, both addition and subtraction will be used, so it is important for the students to understand KEY words and the actual logic of the problem.  For example:

"GIVE more" means addition
"GIVE away" means subtraction
So we can't just look at the word GIVE.

We will send home a review this Wednesday so you can see what sort of problems we are practicing for the test.

SCIENCE:
We have started the Water Cycle and types of clouds.  Students will be tested this Friday over both concepts.
