~Update March 6-10~

Dear Parents,

What is going on this week in our class!

Writing - We will write about our favorite spring time things!

Reading - We will explore different genres that have text features.  

Math -We will have a test over measurement and time on Thursday!  Keep practicing tell time at home.  They will need to know how to measure in inches and centimeters.

Science - We will be learning about the phases of moon!

A few other notes...

Our field trip is March 27th to the Main Street Theater to watch Ramona!.  Please turn in the permission by Friday, March 10th!

If you would like to sign up to chaperone, please let me know by Monday evening!

Economics Study Guide

  1. goods – things that are made or grown for people to sell and buy

~Weekly Update Feb. 27-Mar 3~

Dear Parents,

What is going on this week in our class!

Writing - We are continuing to learn about synonyms and antonyms.  We will wrap up our expository paper.  

Reading - We learning about text features in nonfiction. We will have our test at the end of this week.

Math -We will start learning about measurement!  We will start with inches and centimeters.  

Social Studies- We had lots of fun making our snack bag!  We will have our test on Wednesday.  I will post a study guide. We will also discuss how technology has changed over the years.

The second grade class will present their music program Friday, March 3 at 10 AM in the cafeteria.  We will be going "On Safari" this year as the students take the audience on a musical journey through the African Savannah.
 
Students are encouraged to dress up for this special performance. Use your imagination and creativity when coming up with a costume of your choice.
  • Safari Guide - pith helmet, khaki clothes
  • Favorite animal - Lion, Zebra, Gecko, Giraffe, Bush Babby, Elephant, Crocodile, Bird
ALSO, our field trip is March 27th to the Main Street Theater to watch Ramona and Beezus.  Look for the permission form to come home this week!

~Weekly Update Feb. 21-24~

Dear Parents,

What is going on this week in our class!

Writing - We are learning about synonyms!

Reading - We learning about text features in nonfiction. 

Math -We are practicing tell time to the minute!  Here is a website that you can practice at home.

Your student will need to be able to read an analog clock.  They will also be given a time and asked to draw the hour and minute hands.

~Weekly Update Jan. 30-Feb.3~

Dear Parents,

What is going on this week in our class!

Writing - We will continue to work on our expository paper about the best place to visit!

Reading - We will continue with main idea and supporting details. 

Math -We are wrapping up with plane shapes 3-12 sides.  We will start learning about solid shapes.  A solid shape study guide will come home this week. Please review with your student!  A lot of geometry is memorization!  Please, use the plane shape study guide to help!  Also, a review for the test will come home later this week.

~Geometry~

Dear Parents,
 
We are having our math test tomorrow over the addition and subtraction word problems!  
 
This attachment will help with the homework for this week.  On Wednesday, we will start with geometry.  I just wanted to give you this hand out first because it will be a good study guide for the NEXT test and help with this weeks homework. None of it will be on tomorrows test.  If that is not clear, please email me.

Dear Parents,

What is going on this week in our class!

Writing - We will continue working on prefixes (re, dis, un, pre, mis) and suffixes (ful, less, ly). We will discuss their meanings and how to use them in our writing. We will also begin an expository writing project about a favorite place we like to visit.

Reading - We will continue with main idea and supporting details. 

Math -We will take our Math Test on Tuesday and then begin looking at shapes. We will begin with plane shapes with 3-12 sides. Math Fact test on Friday will cover Using 10 and Doubles to add and subtract. Examples - 7+9, 9+9, 16-7, 12-6

Social Studies - We will be creating our timeline!

Science - We will be studying rocks and how we can classify them using their physical properties.

A few other notes...

1. Students will need to bring a rock to school (one that can fit in their hand) by Friday, Jan. 27. Please bring it in a ziplock back with their name on it.

Hello parents, 

Hope you had a fun 3 day weekend!

 

This week in class...

Writing - We will be working on prefixes (re, dis, un, pre, mis) and suffixes (ful, less, ly). We will discuss their meanings and how to use them in our writing.

 

Reading - We will continue with main idea and supporting details. This week we will look for the main idea in different forms of media such as videos, articles, and texts.

 

Math -We will review for our addition/subtraction word problem test on Friday. Please see my post from last week with the review attached. Students may turn it in any day this week for 5 Dojo points. Math Fact test on Friday will cover Using 10 to add and subtract 1, 2, or 3. Examples - 9+2, 12-9, 15-7, 8+8

 

 

Social Studies - We will study Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and impact on the United States. We will start talking about inventors.  

 

Science - We will start discussing rocks and how to classify them.

A few other notes...

1.  I have postponed the Timeline due date.  The timeline your student creates in class will be a major grade.  I will be out this week, and I'd rather be here when they complete it.  If you could have it turned in by Friday, Jan. 20th that would be great!

~Math Test Review~

You will find the math test review for our test next week.  The test will be on Friday, January 20th.  If you student brings this back completed, they will earn 5 Dojos.  I wanted to give it to you early because I know it is a long weekend!

Weather and Water Cycle Test Review

Water cycle  - the way water moves from Earth to the clouds and back to Earth again

Evaporation –water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor

Condensation – water vapor changes into tiny drops of water and forms clouds

Precipitation – water that falls to the earth as rain, sleet, snow, or hail

Water vapor – the gas phase of water

 

Types of precipitation – rain, snow, sleet, hail

Different types of weather – what would you do on a hot day? cold day?

How does the sky look on a sunny day? cloudy day? stormy day?

Weekly Update Jan. 9-13th

Hello parents, 

It was so good to see my students last week! We will be performing our reader's theater this week!  We did start back on homework and spelling this week.  Don't forget to study math facts!

This week in class...

Writing - We will be working on conjunctions and writing well thought out journal entries.

 

Reading - We are starting off the week with more reader's theater. We will be reading passages and finding main idea and details. We will discuss the difference between the main idea and the supporting details.

 

Math -We will continue with addition and subtraction word problems. The students will have to decide if they need to add or subtract visualizing what is happening and looking for key words in the problem. 

 

Social Studies - We are revisiting our rules and expectations.

 

Science - We will continue talking about the water cycle, looking at different types of clouds, and different types of precipitation. There will be a water cycle test on Friday.  A review will come home.

~Weekly Update Dec. 5-9~

Hi Parents!


This week in class...

Writing - We will be writing different types of poetry. 

 

Reading - We are working on poetry - reading poetry and thinking about who wrote it (girl, boy, object, animal, etc.), why the author wrote it, and how can we connect to it.  

 

Math -  We will be working on 2 and 3 digit subtraction with and without regrouping. We are also looking at word problems with extra information and multiple steps. Subtraction Math Test on Friday this week!

Friday will be our timed fact check - using doubles, +/-0, +/-1, +/-2   examples - 15-7, 9+8, 7-4 

 

Social Studies - We will be looking at different celebrations around the world. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Posadas

 

Science - We will be dicussing weather.

A few other notes...

1. Penguin Patch on Wednesday  from 1:30 -2.  Notes went home in Wednesday folders. The students will be able to shop for gifts.

2. Keep up the First in Math practice at home, our class goal is to be number 1 in 2nd grade!

Today some Pearson pages went home in your child's Wednesday folder.  Please review the ones that they missed.  This will be a good review for the test later next week.  Also, some Pearson homework pages went home.  They are pages 327 and 406.  They can be turned in for Dojos by next Thursday!
